Justin Dominick, the senior director of fitness at the JCC of Greater Baltimore, shares nonprofit perspectives the industry can learn from.

The fitness industry has witnessed tremendous growth in recent years in both for-profit and nonprofit organizations. As a nonprofit fitness professional, I want to share what the for-profit fitness industry can learn from the nonprofit fitness industry, including unique approaches to community engagement, inclusivity and long-term impact.

Community Engagement

One crucial aspect is the art of community engagement. Nonprofit fitness centers often excel at fostering a sense of belonging and creating a supportive environment for their members. By prioritizing community building, nonprofits tap into the power of social connections to motivate individuals on their fitness journeys. For-profit fitness establishments can borrow this approach by offering more than just exercise facilities. They can cultivate a sense of community by organizing group activities, fitness challenges and educational workshops. By promoting a supportive network, fitness centers can create loyal customer bases, enhance member retention and improve overall customer satisfaction.

Inclusivity

The nonprofit fitness industry has demonstrated a commendable commitment to inclusivity, ensuring fitness services are accessible to people from all walks of life. This inclusivity extends beyond physical accessibility to encompass affordability as well. Fitness centers can adopt this approach by offering flexible pricing options, scholarship programs or discounted memberships for individuals with financial limitations. Additionally, fostering an inclusive environment involves catering to diverse demographics and body types, providing specialized programs for seniors, individuals with disabilities or those with specific health conditions. By prioritizing inclusivity, fitness centers can attract a broader customer base and contribute to the overall well-being of the community.

Long-Term Impact

For-profit establishments can learn from nonprofits in this area by aligning their goals with sustainable health outcomes. This can be achieved by providing education on nutrition, stress management and holistic well-being. By incorporating evidence-based practices and empowering members with the knowledge and skills to lead healthier lifestyles, for-profit fitness centers can shift from a transactional approach to a more transformative one. Furthermore, nonprofits often collaborate with local healthcare providers, community organizations and government agencies to extend their reach and maximize their impact. For-profit establishments can embrace similar partnerships to expand their influence and create a more comprehensive ecosystem of wellness.

The nonprofit fitness industry offers valuable lessons for-profit fitness establishments can incorporate to enhance their services. By prioritizing community engagement, inclusivity and long-term impact, for-profit fitness centers can create an environment that fosters both physical and emotional well-being. Through adopting these practices, the for-profit fitness industry can evolve beyond revenue generation and contribute to the betterment of their community while ensuring the success and sustainability of their business endeavors.
