Cultivating Community at Calhoun Beach Club


Calhoun Beach Club located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, has one mission: to help make a difference in the community. 

Cari Tschida, the general manager at Calhoun Beach Club, said they are lucky to be surrounded by many great businesses, homes and the beautiful city lakes in their community. This proximity has allowed Calhoun to make a difference in a variety of ways.

For example, in 2019 the club collected donations for the local St. Louis Park Food Shelf, and throughout last December it served as a collection site for Toys for Tots. “Our members are very receptive to donation, and together we feel we are making a difference in our community,” said Tschida. 

Another way the team likes to support local businesses is by inviting them to showcase their products and services in the club lobby. Tschida said they love to work with partners that share their mission and values, which is to provide the tools to help everyone feel healthy and live their best lives.

Making a difference doesn’t stop outside the club’s walls. Tschida said they aim to make a difference for members as well. 

“We believe our service desk team is the face of Calhoun Beach Club,” said Tschida. “We make sure they are ready to greet our members and guests as they enter the club, assist in answering inquiries, and are always responding with a smile and positive, friendly attitude. This is extremely important to us, and excellent customer service is the foundation of our culture, mission and vision.”

To further better members’ experiences, they hired a new marketing coordinator who specializes in videography, with the goal of incorporating video content into their marketing materials. “She has worked with our personal trainers to create trainer tip videos we can promote on social media, along with sharing healthy recipes and other videos highlighting club events and activities,” said Tschida.

The sense of helping the community not only brings the club together, it’s also what sets it apart from competitors. “We have members who have been here for nearly 40 years with many lifelong friendships established,” said Tschida. “Coming to our club is like going to a second home or visiting a friend. We maintain staff who are very attentive to our members’ needs.” 

In staff meetings, they stress the importance of follow-through and ownership. Last year, the team increased their communication with members and received a lot of positive feedback because of it.

Additionally, Calhoun Beach Club is committed to offering social events like wine tastings, holiday socials and summer pool parties. 

These events speak to the culture and history of the club. “Our members truly enjoy attending these events, and they serve as a wonderful way for our members to connect and network,” explained Tschida. “We always encourage members to bring a guest to our social events, which serves as a great referral and lead generation tool for us.”

Above all, Calhoun Beach Club believes in making sure they have the “fun factor” at work. The employees have all become a solid team that enjoys working together and serving members. “Each day we get to come to work with the enjoyment of knowing we can help people live healthier and happier lives,” said Tschida. “This mentality inspires us on a daily basis.”
